One of your best, so far, Rocky Dad. Next time, the race should be who can write the fastest with no spelling errors, correct punctuation, no AI assistance, and make readers chortle whilst eating their steel cut oats. Try that cocky teen!
Yes, pride most definitely causes sore muscles! Pride recently convinced my 57 year old knees to start doing squats again after a decade hiatus. Pride fueled the fire until my left knee drenched it in cat piss, which really made me feel like a pussy. I’m now making friends with reality and trying to ghost pride. I still squat, but only if a toilet is involved.
Funny. Real. Really funny! Just what I needed as I RICE a swollen knee. Working on acceptance and patience. Talking lovingly to my knee: 'heal, baby, heal. I will give you the time you need. Just please let me get back to my daily yoga and run. I will do anything.' Praying that I don't need surgery. And a question for you: Do you realistically believe that you won't fall to the challenge again? I mean, you are only 37. But seriously, thank you. Love it.
You speaking lovingly to your knee might be the most relatable thing I’ve read all week. And no, I absolutely cannot promise I won’t fall for the next challenge. I mean… what if he dares me?
Honest and real is always the goal, including with myself. Probably why I love your writing. My advice buddy: to work on your ego knowing that it will be much, much more difficult than the challenge with your son. So maybe just enjoy it (you are creating amazing memories and laughs) and have the ice ready. 😘😘
Absolutely loved this story and one hundred percent this is me. I’m 61 now, retired and two years ago I discovered the joys of “walking football”. Now if you google it or search clips on YouTube you completely get the wrong idea of what this is about. This is about 60+ year old men reliving their youth and capturing former glories from when they were 30! I still have to pinch myself that I am getting a kit bag ready on a Sunday morning! My nephew regularly comes to stay and I have been extolling the virtues of the game for a long time which always brings a snort and a laugh! A year ago he came down to join in and boy was he in for a surprise he was pleasantly surprised at both the technical ability and the fitness of the aging codgers. He now comes down as much as possible to play and we have such a great time together. It’s not about the win it’s about spending time together……but we still really want to win deep down 😉
I love this so much, Paul. “Walking football” needs a documentary immediately. The fact that it’s more about connection—but you still want to win? That’s peak dad energy.
It’s always about connection - whether you’re cooking and baking together, posting games or sports or just spending time together it’s the being together that counts
Nice one :D. Another awesome fact is that most of us were at that phase when we finally beat our old man. On my side, I remember that day clearly, it was a swimming sprint :D
I am now at the age when my Junior is swimming for his 2nd year, so I really need to prepare myself to be eventually overthrown :)
Yet isn't that the purpose of raising our young ones? To grow and take our place, to outgrow us. We should be proud of that moment.
But I do have another "secret": Video games! Race here, let your competitive side show without the danger of a "hammy" xD But the secret is that you can co-op them (even single player ones) and start building awesome memories. This is what I've been doing and we both love it!

Challenge accepted! Next time I’m racing him in grammar, dad jokes, and oat tolerance. No AI. No mercy. Just red pens and shattered teen egos.
You know you will have to give teen a handicap AND a five minute head start seeing as how his dad is a master wordsmith?

You had me crack up repeatedly. It was fun reading the whole story! 🙏🏽
