Let me start with this: raising teens is humbling. One day they’re asking for help tying their shoes, and the next they’re explaining to you what TikTok “slaps.” But as a parent, it’s my sacred duty to pass down important life lessons. Like how to do taxes. How to change a tire. And how, in the 1990s, movies were a glorious mix of heart, action, and minimal CGI trauma.
So I made a list. A “Dad Picks the Movie” movie night. No Marvel. No reboots. Just raw, nostalgic, VHS-era greatness. I forced my teen to sit down and watch these five legendary ‘90s films—not out of punishment, but out of love. (And maybe a little bit of spite.)
1. The Sandlot (1993)
Required viewing for understanding childhood, friendship, and how not to pickle a beast. I told my teen, "This is baseball, but it’s also life."
Naturally, they resisted. “Black-and-white intro? Is this a documentary?” But once Benny the Jet laced up those PF Flyers and sprinted like his future was on fire, they got it.
